Position Summary: The primary purpose of this position is to install, modify, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair industrial or domestic high-temperature water and high-pressure piping systems and equipment. This position reports to the Central Plant Supervisor.
The location of this position is Department of the Air Force, 66 Air Base Group, Civil Engineering (66th ABG/CEO), Hanscom AFB, MA 01731
Hanscom AFB, MA is located in a "high cost of living" area.
As a Pipefitter, you will:
- Installs, modifies, and repairs new and existing high-pressure piping systems and equipment such as steam heating, steam generation, and hydraulic systems, steam generators, flash and expansion tanks, condensate, vacuum, and circulating pumps, and radiators.
- Plans and lays out installation, repair, and/or modification of high pressure piping systems and equipment applying and interpreting information in blueprints, charts, and sketches.
- Troubleshoots/inspects high-pressure piping systems and equipment and determines need for modification and/or repair to insure proper and safe operation.
- Performs various operational repairs and preventive maintenance on steam and chilled water distribution systems.
- Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains safe and clean work environment.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: Employee makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and other hard-to-reach places. Must stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, stretch, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts parts and equipment that weight up to 50 pounds. Occasionally lifts items that weight over 50 pounds with assistance from other workers.
Work is done inside and outside, and is usually dirty, dusty, and greasy. Sometimes required to make installations and repairs in areas where bad smelling fumes are present. Frequent exposure to the possibility of uncomfortable heat conditions. Frequently exposed to the possibility of strains, cuts, scrapes, bruises, burns, and infections. Occasionally exposed to the possibility of broken bones.
Employee uses and maintains prescribed safety/protective clothing and equipment such as the following: hard hat, safety glasses, shoes, belts, face shields, respirators, gas masks, ear protection devices, gloves, coveralls, and foul weather gear.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: No specific length of experience is required. However, you must be able to demonstrate that you have the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities gained through training and/or experience to perform the duties described above. IMPORTANT QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENT:You must submit a copy of either your Journeyman Pipefitter or your Master Pipefitter license in order to qualify for this position.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT/OTHER SIGNIFICANT FACTS:
This is a Testing Designated Position (TDP). You will be subject to pre-employment drug testing as a condition of employment and participation in random drug testing. You will be required to drive a motor vehicle. The work requires an appropriate valid driver's license. May be required to train/guide other employees in performance of pipefitting duties. This position is subject to shift hours of work. The employee will be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. May be required to serve "on call" and may be required to be available after duty hours when problems arise. The incumbent is subject to call seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Employee will be required to support Base Readiness and Emergency Operations Exercises and Real World Threats and Events. Employee may be required to support Special Events (i.e. Annual Air Show, Base Exercises) not necessarily performing in their primary skill code. Employee will be required to augment the Civil Engineering Snow Removal Team not necessarily performing in their primary skill code. Employee would be trained on safe snow shoveling and snow removal practice with equipment and would receive appropriate safety equipment. The work may require the employee to carry an electronic beeper or cell phone. May be required to be certified for working with and/or removing hazardous materials. The employee is required to have either a Journeyman Pipefitter or Master Pipefitter license in accordance with AFR 31-1068, para 2.6.1.
