DRS Naval Power Systems (NPS) a multi-site operation responsible for $350 million of revenue with locations in Milwaukee, WI, Bridgeport &Danbury, CT, Fitchburg, MA, and High Ridge, MO with an employee base of approximately 900 employees. NPS is structured into four Lines of Business: Surface, Submarines, Nuclear Instrumentation and Controls and Marlo Coil focusing on supporting the power and propulsion needs of the U.S. Navy. DRS-NPS has an immediate need for a Manufacturing Engineer to provide direct engineering support to specialized manufacturing operations in our Fitchburg, MA location. This person is responsible for implementing cost efficient manufacturing methods, the design of production tools, fixtures and processes both in-house and at vendor locations. Additionally, this person would set up new equipment and processes and instruct Manufacturing Department personnel as required. Manufacturing process knowledge will be used to assess costing data of parts and assemblies. He/she will work closely with engineering, program management, supply chain and manufacturing to achieve objectives in a fast paced and dynamic environment.
Duties and Responsibilities
Responsibilities for this position include design, fabrication, modification and evaluation of manufacturing operations for diverse and complex product lines.
Development of manufacturing operations including factory layout and work flow.
Work with suppliers to optimize their manufacturing processes as it relates to what they produce for the company.
Design tools and fixtures of varying types for the manufacture of company products both in-house and at supplier locations.
Evaluate, recommend and transition products from design to manufacturing to minimize production costs.
Maintain and improve manufacturing process documentation necessary to effectively communicate design intent to manufacturing personnel.
Work closely with the Purchasing Department to evaluate vendors and assess the company’s costs related to purchased parts and assemblies.
Provide design to cost leadership utilizing value engineering concepts and ensuring producibility including supplier engagement as appropriate.
Implement process change to make manufacturing methods as ‘mistake-proof’ as possible.
Organize project and task workloads and may assign work to designers and/or technicians and provide guidance to engineers and program management.
Perform diverse responsibilities where analysis of situations or data requires sound judgment.
Contribute to the client relationships.
Has initiative and able to work effectively with little direction seeking general guidance on new assignments as needed.
Bachelor Degree in engineering with 5+ years applicable experience (or equivalent combination of education/training and experience
Ability to obtain Security Clearance
Additional Desirable Qualifications, Skills and Knowledge
Broad understanding of electrical, electro-mechanical and mechanical equipment
Experience with machining, large fabrications and castings
Welding and NDT processes
Paint process control
Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing
Experience with motor assembly techniques such as winding, insulation and VPI
Able to visualize and comprehend manufacturing equipment or tooling problems and understand the interrelationships of factors affecting the situation.
Interpersonal and communication skills needed to positively influence production processes
Ability to learn new skills quickly and assume additional responsibilities
Must possess strong critical thinking and problem solving skills
Strong knowledge of personal computer software tools like MS Excel and Word
Knowledge of Solid Works or other 3D modeling program
