The Chief Risk Operating Officer (CROO) is a senior managerial role within State Street Global Advisors (SSGA). This person will report directly to the Chief Risk Officer (CRO) of SSGA, manage a team of analysts, and provide leadership across all risk disciplines to ensure that risks are identified, measured, monitored and reported on efficiently and effectively to various committees and boards. The individual should be well versed in a wide range of financial products, portfolio management processes, quantitative methods, and regulation as well as having a demonstrated ability to lead teams, projects, and the creation, implementation, and monitoring of risk processes within an asset management firm.
This position requires the ability to quickly grasp complex concepts coupled with a solid understanding of the various different asset classes and financial instruments that are traded, portfolio construction and trading methods, risk measurement and analytics, quantitative modeling, and risk management techniques. The role involves interactions with SSGA teams globally, including portfolio management, research, product management, legal, trading, and operations, depending on the task at hand. The position requires interaction with senior management and regulators, and ability to effectively communicate, in both written and verbal form, complex analytical processes to clients and regulators globally.
Other responsibilities include: Responsible for the execution of the overall Risk business plan, project plans and for setting and managing the department’s financial budget, space planning and staffing plans. Serve as the lead for ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, including firm-wide regulatory stress testing, coordinating across key work streams and escalating issues to the CRO. Responsible for the maintenance and enhancement of current SSGA risk management processes relating to the corporate stress testing program Work with the SSGA Risk team, Corporate Enterprise Risk, SSGA business units, and SSGA Management to ensure proper reporting is provided at all levels of the organization. Spearhead special projects and provide leadership via participation in SSGA and State Street Committees. Maintain the SSGA Risk Appetite Statement, including monthly reporting to the various Committees and Boards. Be actively engaged in all application, data, and system projects across SSGA Risk as well as oversee and manage data governance for SSGA Risk. Participate as a leader of SSGA Risk within the financial services community.
Requirements: Minimum of 10+ years of relevant experience. Knowledge of financial markets and products. Specific background in asset management, with knowledge in equities, fixed income, asset allocation, and/or currency strongly preferred. Demonstrated management and leadership skills. Prior leadership role in leading teams, meeting deadlines and presenting results to executives. High degree of technical, investment and systems development knowledge. Ability to understand inherent and potential risks across the company. Strong project management and multitasking skills, ability to successfully manage a number of work streams to deadlines and standards of quality. Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work with all levels of personnel across the organization, including senior executives. Proven project management, influencing and analytical skills. Strong presentation and analytical skills – ability to create and deliver clear, well-structured presentations appropriate to the particular audience. Ability to quickly get comfortable with key relevant topics and themes in an evolving regulatory environment. High degree of attention to detail and focus on error-free execution and problem resolution. Ability to work under tight deadlines with multiple deliverables. Advanced degree, CFA, FRM or similar designation a plus Regulatory experience a plus
