Discover Impactful Work:

Within the Purification Business of Thermo Fisher Scientific we are searching for a scientist to support our NPI/Custom Purification Solutions program for new protein purification product development serving the biotech and bio-pharmaceutical industries. This position is ideally suited to a bench scientist with experience in polymer chemistry, surface characterization, and bio-conjugation who thrives in a fast-paced team environment. Experience or understanding in the area of product development for bioprocess purification is a strong plus.

A Day in the Life:

  • Innovate new protein purification media that meet customer specifications.

  • Design and synthesis of new surface functions and bio-conjugation technologies for biomolecule purification solutions that meet performance specifications.

  • Develop and perform analytical methods to surface characterization and assessment of material performance.

  • Apply statistical tools and design of experiments (DOE) optimally and efficiently to evaluate designs, optimize process and understand process tolerance to ensure new product developed with appropriate design control and quality attributes.

  • Draft process SOPs and partner with cross function groups to transfer process into manufacturing environment.

Keys to Success

Education

PhD in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Polymer Science, or a related field; MS degree with 3+ years of experience; BS degree with 5+ years of experience.

Experience

  • Laboratory experience involving surface modification, polymer chemistry and bio-conjugation chemistry with DOE methodology.

  • Experience delivering project completion to timeline.

  • Collaboration experience including sharing data, problem-solving, and collaborating.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Knowledgeable in at least one of the following areas: polymer chemistry, bioconjugation, chromatography, or biomolecule purification.

  • Skilled at written and verbal communication, documenting and sharing experimental methods, data, outcomes, and conclusions to diverse audiences.

  • Ability to identify issues and adapt experiments on-the-fly, a skill facilitated by strong attention to detail and a willingness to ask for help.

  • Ability and interest in learning to operate laboratory synthesis and characterization tools such as chromatography, spectroscopy, surface area and pore analysis.

  • Skilled at prioritization and navigating ambiguity with a positive demeanor.
